R.A. Torrey
Recommendation: 5/5
Description of author: R.A. Torrey (1856-1928) was an American evangelist and Bible scholar. A long time associate of D.L. Moody, he was the dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (Biola) from 1912 to 1924 and pastor of the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles from 1915 to 1924.
Comments: I have often found that the shortest and most basic books have been the most helpful to me in my Christian life. This book is an example. If every Christian would but master the truths in the first chapter of this book (“Conditions for Profitable Bible Study”), there would be much less confusion in our churches. R.A. Torrey lays out with great clarity simple methods of Bible Study, including how to study a book, how to study a topic, and how to study a biography in Scripture. His methods are quite simple, but if followed with consistency, they will produce truly Biblical Christians. Although I especially recommend this book to new believers, I personally still find it refreshing and helpful after having studied the Bible my whole life.
